2019 is nearly here and as digital designers, it is pretty important for us to know the design trends for the upcoming year. This year we saw a lot of bright digital paintbrush artwork, simpler logos, gradients and abstract patterns. But 2019, designs are getting brighter, bolder and more detailed as they try to capture everyone’s attention.
Here are the top design trends that you may be seeing a lot more of in 2019.
Pantone’s Colour Of The Year for 2019 is Living Coral and I think I am going to love 2019 if it means that I’ll be seeing this colour a lot more.
“Vibrant, yet mellow Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment. In reaction to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life, we are seeking authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy. Sociable and spirited, the engaging nature of Living Coral welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity. Symbolizing our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits, Living Coral embodies our desire for playful expression. Representing the fusion of modern life, Living Coral is a nurturing colour that appears in our natural surroundings and at the same time, displays a lively presence within social media.” – PANTONE
I feel as though this has been pretty popular in design already in 2018, but I don’t think it’s over just yet. When designers play around with the layout and break free from the grids, the design automatically becomes more interesting and alluring.

The Serif typeface fonts are seen as traditional and even old-fashioned compared to the modern nature of Sans Serif fonts which have been the rave over the past few years. Think Clinique, Calvin Klein, airbnb, Facebook, Microsoft and Google. But in 2019, the bold Serif font is making a comeback.

I’m pretty sure that ever since Instagram changed its logo to the vintage polaroid into the gradient one, gradients have been everywhere in design, and that’s no exception for 2019.

Trends are always making a comeback and 2019 is going to be the year of 80s Art Deco Patterns/Abstract Geometry. Once again, these have been making an appearance in the past few years but I think this year, we may be seeing a lot more of this.

Modern collages are images layered which combines photographs and graphic elements.

This trend has been going on for such a while now, I don’t think it will be going anyway in 2019. There is something so classic and glam about metallic, that I understand why so many designers and brands use them.

Websites are made up of grids, so alike the asymmetry design these curved shapes are so in trend. Web designers are swapping square buttons, shapes and strips for something a little more curved so it looks like it easily flows.

As technology improves, so does the website animation to give the user a more interactive and personal feel. More and more websites are including animation on their websites and videos as another way to captivate our attention.

Design in 2019 will continue to make a statement. Matching with the Pantone Colour of the Year, Coral, I think this year will be full of bright and vivid colours.

Between bold and bright colours, gradients, custom animation and abstract patterns, 2019 is looking to be a very interesting year in terms of design. I am excited to see how other designers continue to use these trends and what other trends may surface during the year. No matter what, technology is constantly improving and so are the designs.
